ISRAEL GALVÁN
Israel Galván recodifies the physical language of flamenco, using not only modes of expression genealogically close to it, such as bullfighting, but also performative aspects of other rituals of popular culture, from football to activism and cross-dressing. He produces a multiplicity of bodies for a flamenco that is itself going through a process of change. Each of his creations by him is to be a milestone in his pursuit of a dance that seeks to free itself from certain features inherited from a crystallized flamenco. He wants to refocus dance on the actual act of dancing.
Soon after Dietrich Grosse saw in Mercat de les Flors, Barcelona, an atonishing Israel Galván performance of La Curva, he commented with his collegue Andreas Claus his great impression and Claus, in a way, made the liason between Mondigromax and Israel Galván Company. Heaven, in its infinite wisdom, knows what was going on. There was Galván, lean electric, prodigious, the incarnatoin of movement-ideas which he pulls from the air. Galván, the Paganini of flamenco, took his art from him on a helter-skelter exploration of his (and its) identity from him in La Curva. Dance percussive, dance as battle with self, dance (like Nijinksy in his last piteous recital in St Moritz, when he sought God) as salvation… a visionary, a questing and questioning virtuoso, a marvel of the Dance. Despite looking back, flamenco has never been seen before, so new, so sharp-tongued and formulated with brutal hardness like a rap song. The feminine lightness that Galvan’s dance always has is amazing. Athletic, light like a ballet dancer, his appearance is de él, resulting in unbelievable speed and precision. Without any visible effort he turns pirouettes, the snapping of his fingers is a riddle. In general: Watching him is a great happiness. And the message of “Lo Real” is formulated so unobtrusively and dramaturgically that the dance never stumbles… “Lo Real-Truth” is a deep black night piece, a danced memorial that tears down the wall of oblivion by her image burns into our memories.
